Abstract

Educational structures in most institutions remain fixed and siloed relative to the pace of change in fields such as AI and data science, leaving a gap between formal instruction and learners' long-term, often nonlinear, career paths. This talk presents a model for contextual, developmental, and trajectory-aware learning ecosystems built to address that gap. Central to the model is FrontierMap, a tool for visualizing how knowledge paths emerge and diverge within a field, so learners can see not only what has been done but what remains open to explore. The model is illustrated through three case studies: Orthogonal Research Lab's distributed, cohort-based approach to open-source and open-science mentorship; Neuromatch Academy's scalable instruction in computational neuroscience and machine learning; and Plot Twisters, a narrative, co-design-based project supporting personal development through AI-assisted interaction. These cases motivate an approach to education grounded in historical context, ethical framing, and nonlinear career scaffolding, treating learning as an ongoing process of orientation and contribution rather than fixed content delivery.
