Mental Health Paradigms & Perspectives
Accessible Models, Emotional Literacy, and Mental Health Innovation
Mental Health Paradigms & Perspectives is a JOPRO working group in collaboration with Orthogonal Research and Education Laboratory (OREL). Our primary focus lies in the critical examination of the historical and contemporary frameworks used to diagnose and classify mental health disorders. By fostering a nuanced understanding of mental health, we aim to advocate for more inclusive, culturally sensitive, and personalized approaches to mental health care. Through our research, we seek to illuminate the complexities of mental health, advocate for change, and contribute to a more equitable and comprehensive mental health landscape.
Overview
Mental Health Paradigms & Perspectives is a newly-formed working group, dedicated to advancing the understanding of mental health through a critical and historical lens. We delve into the evolution of mental health diagnoses and classifications, particularly through the lens of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and the ICD (International Classification of Diseases). Our exploration traces the changes and developments in these frameworks, highlighting how societal and cultural shifts have influenced the definitions and perceptions of mental disorders over time. Furthermore, we critically examine the often monolithic nature of mainstream mental health practices, which are frequently rooted in hegemonic cultural norms. This can lead to a lack of nuance and inclusivity in mental health advice and treatment. Our mission is to challenge these norms, promote diverse perspectives, and advocate for a more holistic and culturally sensitive approach to mental health.
